Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
