TikTok Content Creators Driving Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are urged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Some experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.

Platform Reaction and Material Elimination

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to keeping the service safe and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with numerous of users, populated with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

After moments of entering one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these groups, posts show black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a injector should be used, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“Individuals are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to recent cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may subject users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
