Space Traveler Reveals Depression After Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
