A Significant Event when Liam Rosenior Overcomes Boundaries

"Rosenior represents an excellent manager that understands football inside out, and that's what matters most.

"But, as Chelsea's first African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this appointment doesn't move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who earned his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team as a substitute in April 1982.

This week, the club hired Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their new head coach following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also owns the London club.

Statistics show only 12 of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding those holding temporary caretaker positions – in the Premier League since it began 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and played locally, he knows this community," continued Canoville.

"When children observe someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, from a family that fights for equality… it is impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is a huge moment for Chelsea, for London, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Does the Data Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager back in the nineties and became the Premier League's inaugural black manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English manager in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present Premier League boss from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of managers of colour across English football is matched by an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

As per a BFP 2023's report, 43% of Premier League footballers come from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, research from Kick It Out found just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership management teams across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At senior coaching positions, according to data from eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same eleven clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as a Chelsea manager, and we hope to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is a wealth of ability present within black and underrepresented communities... they want a chance to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to persist in striving to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become one of only four full-time British managers presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's remaining major divisions in terms of national representation.

16 of the 20 first division managers in Italy are Italian, 11 of the 20 in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany and Ten of the 18 are French.

The present Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all young English coaches with a youth development pedigree will be, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is truly inspirational for young English coaches in the system to see an individual get such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he will be highly successful."

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a brief stint at the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded an MBE in the Honours List for his services in combating inequality within the sport and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He began penning a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill and said roles should be given based on qualification.

He also made a point he has often stated: that vast under-representation results in a failure to understand of players with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" or "passionate", but said he understood the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him with a move from Strasbourg to West London in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "ashamed" upon hearing a staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote an open letter to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the top flight's first African heritage manager in Gullit and the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
